Summary

The Accounting Customer Service (ACS) Accountant works as a part of a collaborative team of fellow Accountants and Associates. Reporting to the Accounting Supervisor, each Accountant is responsible for processing a wide range of accounting transactions requested by internal customers and business partners and completing other monthly accounting duties as assigned. These responsibilities are expected to be delivered with excellent customer service and a high degree of accuracy and quality.

Note: This is a one year term-limited position.

The SSC offers key financial and human resource transaction services to customers through consistent processes and enabling technology.

Responsibilities*

  • Knowledge of and the ability to adhere to University of Michigan policies and procedures
  • Apply understanding of accounting principles, university policies, and the unique characteristics of governmental fund accounting in a University setting
  • Review or prepare journal entries for proper chartfield (chart of accounts) utilization, appropriate application of university accounting principles and sponsor rules and regulations which vary with each of the university’s fund types
  • Analyze financial transactions and/or chartfields for unusual or improper activities and suggest alternate options
  • Initiate the opening of chart of account (chartfield) combinations for projects, short codes, and programs
  • Provide exceptional customer service to the university’s schools, colleges, and units
    • Via TDx ticketing system, Telephone, and email
  • Provide the University community with consultation related to recording of journal entries, chartfield structure, and general university accounting policy and procedures
  • Assist with month and year-end close of the Accounts Payable sub-ledger and the General Ledger
  • Actively use Business Objects and PeopleSoft queries to complete daily responsibilities
  • Opportunity to lead introductory accounting training to the university community

Required Qualifications*

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a major in Accounting

Experience:

  • Working knowledge of Accounting principles, processes, and systems
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver excellent customer service
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to embrace change and be flexible with potential process changes
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and build relationships in the workplace
  • Ability to work efficiently, and accurately with strong attention to detail
  • Experience with identifying process improvements in daily work, and taking initiative to implement the recommended action
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel), database queries, and Google software
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and prioritize throughout the workday

Desired Qualifications*

  • Minimum 2 years of prior University of Michigan accounting experience

Work Schedule

Please note that this position works primarily remotely. Going forward the position may be up to 95% remote and the candidate must live within a reasonable commuting distance from Ann Arbor.
