The South Dakota State University (SDSU) College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) is offering an exciting career opportunity as Associate Dean of Research and Director of the SD Agricultural Experiment Station (SDAES). We are looking for a creative, highly motivated individual to provide strong and effective vision and leadership for the college’s research programs and experiment station. This is a 12-month, 100% time, benefits eligible, position. Professorial rank and tenure are available, dependent on qualifications. This position is supervised by the South Dakota Corn Endowed Dean of the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences.

RESPONSIBILITIES
:

The Associate Dean of Research and Director of the SD Agricultural Experiment Station provides leadership to and oversight of research and sponsored programs in CAFES and SDAES. The successful applicant must direct and motivate the development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative and effective research programs that meet the needs of South Dakota citizens and are consistent with policies and resources of CAFES, SDAES, and SDSU; ensure that SDAES is responsive to all South Dakotans; engage all persons with CAFES research/SDAES appointments by developing and promoting basic and applied research, as well as economic development for South Dakota and beyond; fulfill the role of figurehead for CAFES research and SDAES by embodying and advancing the vision and mission of the organization; integrate CAFES research and SDAES with Extension and teaching programs at SDSU, USDA, and other relevant state, Federal, and private partners; maintain excellent relationships with commodity groups, commodity boards of directors, and the South Dakota Legislature; serve on the CAFES executive team; work closely with the Dean, Director of SDSU Extension, and Director of Academic Programs; work with businesses, commodity groups, faculty and staff, university administrators, university legal counsel, and outside agencies, as well as community, county, state, and national leaders, to assess, prioritize, and address statewide needs through SDAES; serve as the University’s representative and leader for SDAES, such as through the North Central Regional Association of State Agricultural Experiment Station Directors and at the national level through USDA-NIFA and the Association for Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU) Council for Agricultural Research, Extension, and Teaching (CARET); serve as an on-call resource for county, state, and federal policy makers; develop, justify, and allocate budgets for approximately 1,100 funds totaling about $49 million in order to carry out effective CAFES research/SDAES programs and stewarding land resources throughout South Dakota for CAFES and SDAES; participate in the hiring process for faculty positions with CAFES research/SDAES appointments; coordinate and oversee research start-up package formulation, expectations, and distribution when CAFES or SDAES resources are used; supervise assignment of Hatch and Hatch-multi-state projects and ensure that federal reporting requirements are met; and delegate responsibilities to other administrators, faculty, staff, and committees as appropriate.

MINIMUM

QUALIFICATIONS
:

  • Ph.D. degree in Agriculture, Natural Resources, or a related field, completed by date of application;
  • At least ten years of experience in research or sponsored programs;
  • Ability to provide effective administrative leadership;
  • Experience in personnel and fiscal management;
  • Experience in research planning, execution, and delivery of outputs;
  • Demonstrated success in research;
  • Commitment to principles of affirmative action, equal opportunity and working with a variety of audiences;
  • Knowledge of and commitment to land-grant mission;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Organizational and time management skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work as a contributing team member;
  • Ability to advocate CAFES/SDAES programs to and collaborate with a variety of stakeholders and allied industries;
  • Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire, and willingness to travel.

PREFERRED

QUALIFICATIONS
:

  • Eligible for rank of Professor with tenure at SDSU;
  • Experience as Director of a research center;
  • Experience as an Assistant or Associate Dean of Research;
  • Experience in academic research budget preparations and management;
  • Experience in seeking public and private funds to support research programs;
  • Commitment to university-wide research and economic development goals;
  • At least 5 years’ experience in land-grant university systems; and
  • A background in Agronomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture Business, or Agricultural Engineering.

Work Hours

Normal office hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Evening and weekend commitments are frequent in in this position, including some holidays. Responsibilities in overseeing the SD Agricultural Experiment Station may require 24 hour remote availability in some emergency situations.
