Position Summary Information
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute (FPG) is one of the nation’s oldest and largest multidisciplinary centers devoted to the study of children and their families. As one of the nation’s leading child development research centers, we generate scientific evidence, inform policies, and support practices to promote positive developmental and educational outcomes for children of all backgrounds and abilities from infancy to adolescence.
FPG has a particular focus on the study of vulnerable populations and those who have special needs. In addition, FPG is committed to creating a place where everyone is welcome, supported, and has the resources they need to grow and thrive regardless of identity, origin, or difference in circumstances as well as engaging in work that addresses critical issues related to educational inequality and barriers to inclusion that impact children’s wellbeing.
Approximately 280 researchers, implementation and technical assistance specialists, staff, and students work on more than 75 projects related to developmental disabilities; physical, social, and emotional health; early care and education; early intervention and special education, prevention science, and more to address important issues facing all children and families. Our work spans across disciplines from education and psychology to social work and public health.

Position Summary
The purpose of this position is to serve as a team member on the TIS team for the research activities occurring in Southern California. This team member will collaborate with the Principal Investigator in recruitment of preschool centers, teachers, and children who will participate in the project. They will also coordinate schedules of observations in classrooms, instruct teachers on the use of the TIS, deliver and collect TIS iPads, monitor data collection, conduct inter-rater agreement checks, and assist with data verification.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Master’s degree in education, special education, instructional design, educational technology, educational media, or related discipline with coursework in curriculum development or learning theory; or a Bachelor’s degree in the assigned discipline and two years of experience in teaching, educational testing, or instructional design and curriculum development; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Employee needs strong organizational skills and interpersonal skills. Requires experience working in preschool or other early care and education settings. Must possess independent work habits as well as successfully working as a member of a large team. Ability to successfully follow complex research protocols. Must possess the ability to establish relationships and provide training, technical assistance, and coaching around use of the TIS assessment in classroom settings. Requires occasional early morning and evening hours as well as travel to preschool centers and classroom in San Diego and surrounding countries.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Prefer a Master’s degree in education, child and family studies, special education, speech-language pathology, psychology, or related discipline.
Well qualified applicants will have the following preferred experiences:
- Prior experience working in a preschool or early care and education settings. Preference will be given to those with prior experience working within preschool settings.
- Experience training and supervising preschool teachers and staff.
- Experience with observational assessment.
- Possess strong verbal presentation and group facilitation skills.
- Display strong initiative, teamwork, critical thinking, and problem solving.
