FTE
), 12-month, fixed-term Faculty Research Assistant position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.
This faculty research assistant position serves to advance the multidisciplinary research, outreach and education priorities of the OSU Dry Farming Project, including: crop and seed stewardship, soil and water management, farmer livelihoods, equity and inclusion, and local and state policy, as they pertain to the practice of dry farming. Additionally, this position will advance the research, outreach and education objectives of the following current grants: USDA WSARE Research to Grassroots (WRGR22-002), NREL Agrivoltaic study (22-1870), drought-tolerant bush dry bean breeding ARF grant (ARF22094A), and drought-tolerant corn endophyte study (ARF23214A).

Position Duties
70% – Field research related activities including seed counting, sorting and inventory; propagation, soil preparation, planting, weeding, data collection, analysis and reporting, and harvest at research and demonstration sites around Corvallis; site visits with participating farms within a 3 hr drive from Corvallis; maintenance and inventory of storage space and field equipment. Drive to field sites for research and operate a walk-behind tractor.
20% – Producing outreach and education related content including photos, videos, presentations, and social media posts; enter, analyze, interpret, and draw conclusions from the data, compile and report on field data and outreach surveys; writing drafts of extension and peer reviewed publications related to dry farming.
5% – Assistance with outreach and education events including field tours at Corvallis and at participating farms; co-organizing outreach events and conference sessions including Dry Farming Collaborative Winter Convening, OSU Small Farms Conference, and Organic Seed Growers Conference.
5% – Engagement with collaborators including OSU, nonprofits, ag professionals, and producers.
Minimum/Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a field with a primary academic focus in horticulture, botany, agriculture, and/or soil science.
- 1 year of farming experience or other work experience related to the field of horticulture, botany, agriculture, and/or soil science.
- 1 year experience in peer reviewed manuscript writing.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including data entry and basic analysis in Excel.
- A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
- Multidisciplinary academic degree that addresses broader context of agriculture as it pertains to socioeconomics, history, social justice, and/or governmental policy.
- More than 1 year of experience with farming or farming research.
- Record of/commitment to work with underrepresented/underserved students or other audiences.
- Life experience, education, or training that broadens capacity to equalize student success or impact underserved audiences.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The incumbent in this position will have access to an office space in the Agricultural Life Sciences building on campus, as well as access to storage facilities and labs at the Vegetable Research Farm and Oak Creek Center for Urban Horticulture. A significant portion of incumbents hours will involve field work, in which several hours will be spent working in hot weather doing the following activities: planting, hand weeding, using a wheel hoe, running a walk-behind tractor and weed whacker, recording data, and harvesting crops, which may include lifting boxes up to 50 lbs. Incumbent will be exposed to large amounts of corn pollen during corn pollination activities. Part of this position involves solo travel to participating farms, some that are up to 3 hours driving by car.
