Job Description

General Job Overview:

The OHIO Student Farm operates within a culture of sustainability to serve as a model for environmental stewardship and sustainable agricultural practices. This farm manager position requires someone with strong leadership skills who enjoys working in a dynamic environment and collaborating with a diverse set of stakeholders including faculty, students, and community members. It requires a love of people and education, as well as plants and farming. Good communication skills, time management and organization skills, along with a strong working knowledge of sustainable farming practices, are critical.

This position will be for employment as an eight month term position, beginning in April.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Participate in and oversee the operation of a 2-acre education-focused farm producing fruit and vegetables using sustainable and/or organic practices. Day-to-day activities may include participating in or directing: cultivation, planting starts, seeding, transplanting, irrigation, soil management, weed management, high tunnel operations. Farm manager will use sustainable practices such as cover cropping and mulching. Manager will maintain soil fertility without synthetic fertilizers and control pests only with organic approved pesticides. Occasional tool maintenance and repair is required. Regularly meet with Farm Director and other collaborators at the farm to plan and develop farm objectives such as production plans, workflows, and budgeting for farm operations, and planning construction, modification, and repairs of infrastructure and/or equipment. Coordinate record keeping systems for compliance with good agricultural practice (GAP) and certified organic status.
  • Manage and instruct a rotating and diverse group of student workers and interns who are assisting farm manager with day to day activities including cultivating, planting, seeding, irrigating and weeding. Plan and direct harvests, produce packing, and delivery to local businesses and Ohio University.
  • Actively work to identify new outlets for vegetable and small fruit sales opportunities while maintaining existing outlets through outreach to customers and support for product sales. Supervise student intern who is assigned to assist with harvest and distribution. Liaise with, and coordinate distribution with food donation outlets when appropriate. Provide material support for faculty in conducting classes and research data collection; assist with tours and community outreach at the farm.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED by time of start date.

Valid driver’s license and a minimum of 1 year of work-related experience.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

Associates degree (or vocational/technical school degree) or Bachelors degree in Agriculture, Ecology, Biology, National Resource, or a related field.
