About Share the Harvest

Founded in 2010, Share the Harvest Farm is a 501c(3) non-profit farm with a mission to fight food insecurity on the East End of Long Island, NY, through fresh, organically-grown produce. We do this by growing diverse vegetables, fruit, and flowers on 6 acres of protected land, delivering fresh produce to community partners (food pantries, senior centers, women’s shelters, affordable housing units, and more) for donation each week, maintaining an on-site farm stand and utilizing the profits to continue to fund our work, and prepping/freezing produce during winter months for year-round donation. Although we are not certified, we grow via organic methods and work to ensure soil maintenance and health as well as thoughtful stewardship of the land.

About the Role

Our field crew is the centerpiece of the farm – it’s what gets the food from the field to the table. As part of our Field Crew, you’ll participate in the growing process from seed to harvest and even further through post-harvest delivery. Field Crew is primarily responsible for seeding, preparing fields for planting and successions, transplanting, irrigating, weeding, ensuring plant maintenance (i.e. tomato trellising!), harvesting, and washing/packing of farm produce. Other responsibilities may include making donation deliveries to our partner sites, processing and freezing produce for winter donation, supporting and answering questions from field volunteers, and attending farmers’ markets. Candidates are expected to have an interest in farming, sustainability, and/or food justice. Varying levels of experience are welcome: we encourage first time field crew through seasoned farm staff to apply for the position. An ideal candidate is hardworking, maintains a positive attitude, and sees themselves as a constant learner through direct experience. We are looking for folks with strong time-management skills, the ability to work independently and within a team, and an interest in the mission-driven work of our organization.

Attitude is important. We strive to have fun on the farm while managing our responsibilities. This depends on communication (following directions and asking questions when a task is unclear), punctuality, and teamwork. You will also be expected to work with our volunteers on a weekly basis and larger-scale volunteer events, including garlic planting or onion harvesting. As a non-profit, we connect with members of the community through our donation sites, farm stand, public events and fundraisers, and the volunteer opportunities we offer for folks ages 14+ on our farm as well as visiting school groups.
