The Office of Academic Advising & Student Success strives to promote academic success and foster personal growth by empowering undergraduate students to become active participants in their educational journey at UNT Dallas.

Position Summary

The Peer Advisor (PA) serves as the initial point of contact for students engaging with the Office of Academic Advising & Student success. Connects students to appropriate academic resources and assists with fundamental advising tasks for students. Helps students develop behaviors and habits that contribute to success in college. The PA is an important part of the advising team and supports university enrollment and retention initiatives.

Some examples of work:

  • Supports students with registration for semester classes
  • Helps students access and complete appropriate academic forms and documents, in particular those for the Registrar’s Office
  • Teaches students to self-navigate campus resources, such as the student center, degree audit, university catalog, and campus policies
  • Provides general information regarding office services to continuing UNT Dallas students
  • Participates in campus events or activities related to advising
  • Uses software to schedule and manage student/advisor meetings and meeting check-in
  • Utilizes multiple methods to reach students (phone, email, text, web-chat, and in-person methods)
  • Maintains electronic and physical records of currently enrolled UNT Dallas students
  • Manages security sensitive/confidential information
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Currently enrolled UNT Dallas, UNT Dallas College of Law, HSC or UNT student in good standing and making satisfactory progress toward completion of a degree or certification program. Applicants must possess the following:

  • Excellent customer service skills, as well as effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office computer applications (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Some knowledge of office practices and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural and social backgrounds.
  • Responsible, reliable and punctual.
  • Ability to learn assigned tasks readily, to adhere to prescribed routines, and to develop some skill in the operation of common office equipment.

Work Schedule

19hrs/week typical. Work will accommodate student class schedule. Office open 8am-5pm. May work occasional evenings or weekends to support related events. Work schedule can expand during periods when school is not in session based on student’s request.
