We have grown steadily over the past 20 years to become the largest expanded learning time organization in San Mateo County, with sites in East Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Redwood City, South San Francisco, Daly City, and San Mateo. Our 24 program locations serve nearly 3,500 students countywide and are made possible with a $28 million organizational budget and through the talents of a 300-employee-strong workforce that keeps growing.
Position Overview
BGCP’s Redwood City Clubhouse, in partnership with the Sequoia Union High School District, wants to support high school students with Biology (and other science-related subjects). Designed to provide students with dynamic, academic, and enrichment activities to support and complement the school year curriculum and improve school outcomes and interest in learning. Drawing on best practices in youth development, staff members guide students to build academic and life skills in a meaningful, fun context. The Summer Science Teacher will help students strengthen their knowledge regarding science-related material. This position is for those who are available to work part-time and satisfy one of the following: have a valid teaching credential, are currently enrolled in a credential program, or passed the CBEST and CSET-Science exams.
Employment Status: Part-Time, Hourly, Seasonal/Temporary (Summer 2023)
Pay Rate: $50.00 per hour Dates: June 12th-July 28th Expected Work Hours/Schedule: 3 days per week
- Monday and Wednesday: 2-5 PM (on-site)
- Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday: 1 day (remote)
Location: Redwood City, CA
What will you do?
- Engage with students daily during the summer program to support them in their mastery of science skills, particularly in Biology
- Lead small group instruction and 1:1 tutoring sessions for students
- Create PBL for students learning Biology
- Communicate academic progress made as well as areas for improvement to other staff and parents
- Direct students and guide them to additional resources as supplemental learning tools in science
- Manage a classroom of approximately 1-15 students
- Ensure quality programs, prepare youth for success, promote the safety of members, and quality in programs
- Look for opportunities to recruit members to increase the numbers
- Efficiently utilizing social-emotional skills to identify and address behavioral issues and notify club directors of any escalating issues

Qualifications & Experience
- Experience working with high school teens in academic environments
- Clear communication skills when dealing with teens, staff, and parents
- Currently working towards Bachelor’s Degree in a Science related field or currently have an Associate’s Degree in Science
- Familiar with courses and curriculum at Sequoia Union High School District
- Proficient/fluent in Spanish preferred
- Experience teaching Science to high school students, familiar with 9-12 grade content
- Hold or working towards a single-subject teaching credential preferred
