Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Policy Monitoring and Analysis:
- Track and analyze local, state, and federal legislation affecting older adults, aging services and relevant healthcare programs (Medicaid & Medicare).
- Prepare policy briefs, reports, and position statements to inform and guide DAAA's advocacy efforts.
- Advocacy and Outreach:
- Develop and implement advocacy strategies to influence public policy in favor of older adults.
- Build and maintain relationships with elected officials, government agencies, and community stakeholders.
- Represent DAAA at legislative hearings, meetings, and public forums.
- Community Engagement:
- Educate and mobilize community members, including older adults and caregivers, to participate in advocacy efforts.
- Organize and conduct advocacy training sessions, workshops, and events.
- Collaborate with community organizations and coalitions to amplify advocacy efforts.
- Communication and Public Relations:
- Develop and disseminate advocacy materials, including newsletters, social media content, and press releases.
- Serve as a spokesperson for DAAA on legislative and policy issues.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of aging issues and trends to effectively communicate with stakeholders.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in public policy, Social Work, Gerontology, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in legislative advocacy, public policy, or a related area.
- Strong understanding of the legislative process and issues affecting older adults.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency in using advocacy tools and technology, including social media platforms.
- Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Passion for advocating on behalf of older adults and improving their quality of life.
The Legislative Advocate will play a crucial role in advancing the mission of the Detroit Area Agency on Aging (DAAA) by advocating for policies and legislation that benefit older adults and their caregivers.
