Job Summary

The Coordinator for Student Learning will provide leadership for academic support, wellbeing and first-year student transition initiatives in residential communities.

Essential Functions

  • Develop, implement and assess student learning initiatives focused on the academic success and wellbeing of first-year students within the framework of the residential curriculum. Supervise academic support and success services delivered through assigned Residential Academic Success Centers located in first-year communities.
  • Provide high-quality leadership and supervision to a team of approximately 30 undergraduate live-in Peer Mentors to implement residential curriculum initiatives and strategies, build relationships with residents, and respond to community needs. Participate in selection and search processes for Residential Life full-time, graduate and undergraduate student positions. Facilitate and participate in staff meetings and training programs and provide on-going training for Peer Mentors.
  • Work effectively with Residence Directors to coordinate student learning initiatives and to respond to the needs of residential communities. Develop collaborative working relationships between Peer Mentors and Resident Assistants within residential communities.
  • Attain working knowledge of applicable collective bargaining unit agreements (CBA) for undergraduate staff.
  • Serve as lead instructor for the EDUC 391R: CORE, the one credit, pre-employment requirement of all Resident Assistant and Peer Mentor candidates.
  • Follow up with first-year students as outlined by established campus case management, make appropriate referrals, and maintain accurate case management records.
  • Perform on-call responsibilities for the residential system on a regularly scheduled rotation during the year, including all University break periods and holidays; including being accessible to department issued cell phone 24 hours per day and remaining within required radius of campus during periods of on-call responsibility. Demonstrate excellent critical problem-solving skills and ability to follow written protocols during response to on-call incidents.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative and effective working relationships with campus partners to support the residential student experience, including but not limited to Student Success, Academic Partners including Residential Academic Program (RAP) instructors, and Campus Life and Wellbeing. Respond to parent/family and campus partner inquiries or complex issues related to the student experience in the residence halls.
  • Support and participate in university initiatives such as New Students Orientation and Transition initiatives, student organization events, and others related to the overall student experience. Participate in and/or lead Residential Life processes including searches, move-in/move-out, training, and events. Serve as move-in coordinator supervising a team of Minute Mover Team Leaders and Minute Movers during the fall move-in process.
  • Ensure financial resources are utilized in accordance to established policies and procedures.
  • Engage in professional development activities related to Residential Life and position responsibilities. Remain current in related best practices and relevant trends.
  • On an as needed basis, sign out and operate University golf cart or vehicle.

  • Perform related duties as assigned or required. Understand responsibilities with respect to Title IX, Clery and other compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrate capacity, skill, and willingness to engage students and contribute to student success.
  • Understand responsibilities with respect to conflicts of interest and behaves in ways consistent both with law and with University policy.
  • Contribute toward creating a positive and respectful workplace. Use access to sensitive and/or not yet public university related information only in the performance of the responsibilities of position and exercises care to prevent unnecessary disclosure to others.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Master's degree plus one (1) academic year post-baccalaureate experience working in higher education, OR Bachelor's degree plus three (3) academic years post-baccalaureate experience working in residential life.
  • Class D Driver's License.
  • Demonstrated success supervising student staff and leading a successful work team.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations and developing inclusive communities and work teams.
  • Contemporary understanding of student learning, student development, and community engagement in a residential setting. Familiarity with residential curricular models.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) communication skills.
  • Established skills in typical office suite software such as Microsoft Office applications and web-based data management systems.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Experience with a curricular model of student learning outside of the classroom.
  • Previous work experience in medium to large residential life program (min. 5,000 beds) at a public institution.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  • Typical office environment within a residential setting.
  • Ability to lift boxes and materials that weigh up to 30 lbs. for transport and set up.
  • Ability to access and reach residence halls throughout the campus for purposes of responding to incidents and meeting with staff, students, and groups of students.
  • Position is required to reside in an on-campus staff apartment.

Work Schedule

  • 37.5 hour work week.
  • Monday through Friday including a minimum of two evenings per week.
  • Required to work some evenings and weekends.
  • This position is designated by Residential Life as essential personnel who may be expected to work in the event of an emergency or university closure.
