POSITION:
The Lower School Learning Specialist provides comprehensive support to students with a variety of neurotypes and learning needs, handling a caseload of 8 contact hours of direct service to students in grades 1-5 as assigned. The Learning Specialist constructs accommodation plans for individual students using a range of available information from faculty and staff, families, and specialists. In close collaboration with classroom teachers and the administration, the Learning Specialist ensures implementation of appropriate support for each student in the caseload, providing guidance to teachers as well as push-in and pull-out support individually and in small groups as appropriate.
FOCUS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide 1:1 academic coaching, small group instruction, pull-out and push-in support for a caseload of 8 contact hours
- Support students in developing executive function skills including organization, self-management and emotional regulation
- Provide targeted scaffolding and instruction for the development of core literacy skills
- Consult with teachers and families to interpret and discuss screenings/evaluation results, create internal accommodation plans and evaluate/adjust them as needed,and make recommendations for further outside evaluation or intervention
- Collaborate with and provide guidance to teachers and families to ensure implementation ofaccommodations, recommend additional strategies for the classroom or at home, and provide specific referrals, as needed
- With the learning support team, foster inclusive classrooms by offering resources, assistance, advice, and training to enable faculty to better meet the needs of all learners
- Administer initial psycho-educational screening of students referred by teachers or families for academic concerns
- Liaison between families and outside support services
- With classroom teachers and program managers, ensure all accommodation needs for standardized tests and assessments
- Participate in Student Support Team meetings for students in the caseload as well as Lower School faculty meetings, the pre-rentrée meetings prior to school, and all internal professional development days
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 2 years teaching experience
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in relevant field, Master's degree preferred
- Excellent communication skills with both students and parents
- Positive history of collegiality and collaboration with other teachers and administrators
- Knowledge of French preferred but not required
- Expertise in language and literacy development, particularly in a bilingual setting
- Proactive, diplomatic, supportive approach to communication with all constituencies
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a diverse, fast-paced, multilingual educational environment
- Bachelor's degree in elementary education or special education or equivalent is required; master's degree and/or additional training in special education is preferred
- Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
- Knowledge of French is a plus
Salary range for this position $22,803- $38,841 pro-rated depending on experience and qualifications.
